oil viscosity?

What's the deal with oil viscosity? for example, 10W30 as opposed to 10W40? i know that the W means use it in winter. but whats the difference between the series of numbers?
yes the W does stand for Winter. The numbers are the viscocity (thickness) of the oil. The smaller the number the thinner the oil. So a 10w30 would start out as a 10 weight cold and when the engine warms up it would be a 30 weight. The 10w40 would start out at a 10 weight and turn into a 40 weight. Some people use SAE 30 oil which is a 30 weight all the time but that is hard on you car in the cold and for start up. The smaller the number in the front the faster it get to the top of the engine. Which is the most important thing to get lubricated at startup. that is why most newer cars are using 5w30 or 5w20 oil. Some even use 0w20 oil now. It is really about a 2 weight but they round every number to the nearest 5 up or down.

the first number is viscosity and the last number is the weight.

It's multi-viscosity.Thinner when cold and thickens as it warms up.
gdwrnch40 | Dec 10, 2006
the w means weight. The 10 is the weight of the oil when cold (thinner) and when it gets hot it is 30 (thicker) they are just trying to have a good oil over different driving temps. and conditions.

What oil viscosity to use on a 99 Audi A4?
Dec 12, 2009 by Alex | Posted in Audi
I just bought the car, I want to change the oil on it but I don't know what viscosity to use. Someone told me that it didn't matter but it had to be synthetic & someone else told me that it had to be 20W-50, they didn't say anything about synthetic. I need to change it asap, any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.
Its a 99' Audi A4 1.8T, 2WD, Automatic.
5w30 any oil

I spent about 1000.00 in oil analysis on several bikes and cars (the KLX was NOT one of them), and off-road thumpers are generally very hard on oil. I'd run several of my cars 15000 miles before changing them (backed up by Used Oil Analysis), but, not so on these bikes. Honda Goldwing? Sure, it may be able to go nearly 10,000 miles between changes, depending on the conditions. I have used both 10w-40 and 20w-50 oil before. I prefer the 10w-40 weight oil for being easier to start with and still providing the thickness for high heat. The temps around my area in the summer may reach over 100*F, and the KLX runs fine with the 10w-40 oil. Now, if race or off-road most of the time, then the 20w-50 will be the better choice against thermal breakdown. But for street cruising and the occusional off-roading, the 10w-40 works best. Ever since Castrol won a lawsuit against Mobil 1, the term "synthetic" means very little...it's now a marketing term, not a scientific term. MOST synthetics (funny that this now includes some Mobil 1 products) are actually just severely hydrocracked Group III mineral oils. The performance benefits of thes Group III oils are ALMOST as good as anything made in a laboratory, at MUCH, MUCH lower cost. It won't hurt anything to run "synthetics" (again, because MOST of them aren't REALLY synthetic), but, you stand to gain perhaps no real benefit from them. Modern, true synthetics don't have the seal swelling problems of old, and you surely aren't going to hurt your engine...the only thing that's really important is to not try to extend oil change intervals too much with synthetics in a carburated, wet-clutch, shared sump thumper. That's a reason to use Rotella 15w-40. Then again, the KLX doesn't hold a big volume, so, it's not really expensive if you choose to use a synthetic and still change it often. We ride at 110+ F here in the desert...it makes sense to use a 50 weight, or, something close to a 50 weight, such as Rotella....

Why Do Car Makers Recommend 'Zero-Weight' Oil?But changing to ligher oil can help engines run more efficiently and provide better fuel economybecause it generates less resistance compared with heavier, higher-viscosity oil. And nearly every car maker is trying to improve fuel economy.
Fuel oil dropped 66 cents to $5.76 a barrel below Dubai crude, PVM said. A widening discount means increased losses for refiners turning oil into residual products. The premium of 180- centistoke fuel oil to 380-centistoke grade, or the viscosity and more »
