    DMSO - Day 12

I haven't used any DMSO since Day 8, when Lisa suggested I take some time off to see if the redness goes away.

    Well, it seems it has.

A couple other things to note are that I've been putting a silicon strip on my wrist, as well.

    She gave me one...

    DMSO - Day 1

As noted, this stuff smells strongly of garlic, though I didn't taste it in my mouth as testimonials said I would.

The area turned a bit red shortly after, and itched a bit, but that's normal.

    DMSO - Day 15

A few minutes after my first application of DMSO in a few days.

I paid special attention to washing it beforehand.

No redness or itching occurred at all this time.

    DMSO - Day 13

Well, it looks even better than yesterday, and is not raw or red at all really.

In fact, I even worked out today and it felt amazing. Not that this test has anything to do with how it feels, really.

Tomorrow I wash it and re-apply DMSO in the morning and see...

    DMSO - Day 7

Well, I had my last Occupational Therapy session on this day, and asked my doctor what she thought of how it looked.

She thinks the redness and splotches are due to the DMSO.

Upon further discussion, it may have been due to my not washing my skin thoroughly...

Is it safe to mix DMSO with ascorbic acid and apply it to the skin?

If I apply DMSO(Dimethyl sulfoxide) directly to the skin, will it help the skin absorb the ascorbic acid(vitamin C). Should I mix the two together or apply the DMSO first and then apply the ascorbic acid? Will the DMSO mix with the ascorbic acid and form new compounds? Is this safe?

I think it is more effective if you just take a vitamin C pill.
If you want to do this at home I would not recommend it since you dont know what other chemicals you accidentally solve into the DMSO, and since DMSO speeds up the body's absorption of chemicals, compounds which would not be toxic in other circumstances can have serious effects this way.

Would DMSO help plant cells absorb organic and inorganic nutrients?

Does DMSO increase the permeability of plant cell walls as it does in animals? I'm wondering if using a little when I foliar feed my plants will help the plants absorb nutrients. These are not food plants and I'm using non-burning organic nutrients (humates, seaweed extract), not plain fertilizer. I'm not finding much info online.

I found your question when looking for information on the same subject. I also found this forum thread regarding DMSO as a hormone transport agent:

http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/f13/b1-dmso- rooting-hormone-27496.html

It looks to me like not much research has been done on this yet -- the uses in that thread seem to be largely "superstitious" in that they are not apparently backed by any empirical evidence. I am planning to use DMSO to aid transport of 6-benzylaminopurine and naphthaleneacetic acid into cacti and other succulents. I'll probably set up some tests to see what effect the inclusion of DMSO in different concentrations has on the apparent uptake of hormone from the lanolin-based paste. Unfortunately, it will probably be at least a year before solid results are achieved, and the effectiveness will probably vary between species and depending on the particular chemical being transported. My advice would be to experiment and see if it seems to work for you.

DMSO = Dimethyl sulfoxide. It is a chemical that carries other chemicals through the skin into the bloodstream. It can be toxic, and some consider it to be carcinogenic, or possibly, mutagenic.

The researchers from Melbourne have also noted:

“Long Evans rats (n = 17) were intravitreally injected with five different doses of DMSO representative of those reported in the literature and spanning over 3 log units of vitreal concentration (0.01-8%).” “Retinal function was evaluated 1 h after injection using electroretinograms, and the waveform was decomposed into outer (photoreceptor), middle (ON-bipolar cell) and inner retinal (amacrine and ganglion cell) components.” “DMSO induces a dose-dependent decrease in retinal function for concentrations of 0.6% or more which is retinal layer specific.” “The photoreceptors of the outer retina returned normal responses at all doses (P > 0.05), whereas the mid-retinal bipolar cell response showed dose-dependent losses ranging from 21 +/- 1 to 82 +/- 1% (0.6-8% DMSO; P < 0.05).” “In a similar dose-dependent fashion, the inner retinal response was also affected by DMSO (0.6-8%: 23 +/- 12 to 98 +/- 3% loss, P < 0.05).” “A single dose of DMSO < or =0.1% (2.96 x 10(-5) microM) may be safely used to dilute compounds injected into the vitreous of a rat eye.” “Higher doses produce short-term (at least 24 h) retinal dysfunction.” (1) Tsai TI, Bui BV, Vingrys AJ: Dimethyl sulphoxide dose-response on rat retinal function.
