cryotherapy?
Jan 02, 2007 by *KiM* | Posted in Women's Health
has anyone ever had cryotherapy to treat precancerous cells in the cervix? my appointment is tomorrow and i'm very nervous. the biopsy itself was painful enough, i was just wondering how much worse this procedure will be. thanks so much.
I had it done while in college (about 5 years ago). It wasn't painful, just uncomfortable. It actually feels like moderate menstrual cramps. I've had a child since then and the cryotherapy was no where near as painful as contractions! You'll be fine. Just relax and breath during the procedure and try not to tense up.
Good Luck,
Tonya

It's supposed to be less painful than the biopsy. Let your doctor know that you had pain during the biopsy, and they may be a little more gentle or use a better numbing agent. They might also be willing to give you some mild tranquilizers so you can relax.
Afterwards you'll probably have clear discharge and mild cramping, but the whole thing isn't supposed to be one of the more agonising procedures.

I had it done as a multi-phase treatment for cervical cancer. I found the cryo actually slightly less uncomfortable than the biopsies, even though I had some extensive work done. Quite frankly, it really depends on the person, and your pain tolerance. You could call your doctor's office and ask if it is ok to take Ibuprofen or something similar prior to the procedure.
One thing to remember is that although its uncomfortable, it is VERY brief... maybe less than 30 seconds of discomfort.
Good luck.

Cryotherapy??
Nov 16, 2007 by shi.tty.britches | Posted in STDs
I went to my doctor and had a pap done, then i had a culposcapy done and I was told i have hpv, i have to get cryotherapy where i quess they freeze off the bad parts. Does that hurt and what exectly does it involve. Thank you. And now that i have hpv what does that mean?
Can i have sex after? how long do i need to wait?
I was told I have HPV about five months ago. I had a colposcopy and was told that the changes in my cervix were minor so they did not remove anything. But I do have some friends who've had the cryotherapy done. They've told me that's it's definitely uncomfortable, but not necessarily painful. There is quite a bit of cramping for a couple days after, but that goes away.
HPV scared me at first when I found out. There are many forms of it, but it sounds like you have the same form I have. HPV is the biggest cause of cervical cancer. But please, don't panic about that because by removing these bad cells and having annual or sometimes bi-annual Paps done, you reduce your changes of getting cervical cancer by A LOT. You can still have children and if by some chance it is passed to your baby, the childs immune system will, in just about every case, fight off the virus and never have any problems due to it.
I asked my doc a lot of questions when I found out about it, which is exactly what you should do. She told me the best things I can do are exercise, take a good multivitamin and eat healthy. In many cases your bodies immune system will fight off the HPV and you may never have a problem again. I did a lot of research on tons of websites too to find out what I could do to help myself. They also suggested a good multi, a garlic extract vitamin (Natural Factors is the best and garlic is a natural anti-viral), folic acid (good for your cervix cells and also good when you decide to try and get pregnant), and vitamin E (good for healing).
The best thing you can do is be aware of it and try and stay as healthy as you can. Make sure you go for your Paps every year; your doctor will probably have you go every six months for a while to keep an eye on the HPV and your cervix.
If you ever need to talk I'm always willing to talk about this. I was scared out of my mind when I found out because the first thing I thought of was cancer and that I'd never have children. But that's SO NOT the case. Get all the info you can and don't stress.

I had this done about 10 years ago. You will have some cramping for a day or two, much like menstrual cramps. I have had normal pap smears every since. You need to speak with your OBGYN about what it means to have HPV because there are many different types. I would also ask your doctor about how long to wait before sex. Usually a few days.

Whats the difference between cryotherapy and induced hypothermia?
Mar 19, 2010 by blossom1877016 | Posted in Medicine
I know cryotherapy is basically using cold temperatures for medical reasons such as after surgery or cardiac arrest, but isnt that the same thing as induced hypothermia?
Technically they could be the same thing but in practice they are quite different.
Cryotherapy is usually the application of intense cold locally...for example cryosurgery where intense local cold is used to kill abnormal tissue (like a wart).
Hypothermia is typically the decrease in the body's core temperature. Usually in a gradual and controlled manner.
