Cryogenics?
Dec 20, 2007 by Drs P | Posted in Biology
Is it possible to be frozen while living or after death to be thawed in the future when a cure for any disease you have is available.
It can be done, but pricey.
There is no assurance that you'll survive the freezing process or the thawing process.
I don't think that people can be brought back to life, although in the far future, maybe. After all, the body is made up of complex molecules that decay with time. Cold temperatures delay, not stop this process.
Putting someone alive and thawing them later? Can't say. It has never been really done, except in frogs, which have a cool protein that survives the freezing process if done slowly (vs cryogenics - must be done fast to prevent death).

it is possible but very expensive...also there is no gaurantee that you can be brought back to life

It is being done. The freezing part is easy. Only a dog has been revived. No human has ever been revived.

How come cryogenics doesn't work but freezing embryos does?
Nov 04, 2008 by Karmeg | Posted in Medicine
I read that cryogenics does not work because as you freeze the body ice crystals cause the cell walls to rupture. So how come you can freeze (and defrost) embryos then? Is it a different procedure/technique?
Embryos are frozen at a very simple stage, with no specialised tissues or organs that could be damaged.
honourableone | Nov 04, 2008
Embryo`s have very few cells compared to a person.

Interesting Question for sure!!

Whats the best homeade cryogenics lab setup?
May 05, 2009 by BLANK | Posted in Other - Science
I want to experiment with cryogenics and preserving living tissue. So what specific materials do I need? Also, which cryoprotectants are the most effective and how can I purchase the materials for this experiment? As detailed as possible please. I'm talking about like where can i get test tubes, syringes, dry ice(?), glycerol, and any other materials I might need.
You do not MEAN **cryogenics**, which is low temperature physics: "The branches of physics and engineering that involve the study of very low temperatures, how to produce them, and how materials behave at those temperatures". By contrast, cryonics is "The emerging medical technology of cryopreserving humans and animals with the intention of future revival" and cryobiology is "The branch of biology involving the study of the effects of low temperatures on organisms (most often for the purpose of achieving cryopreservation)." What you mean is "What is the best homemade cryobiology lab setup?"
A half-and-half mixture of ethylene glycol and DMSO has proved to be valuable in producing vitrification (solidification without ice formation) in cryonics, but other cryoprotectants might be more suitable for your needs. As for getting laboratory equipment, it does not take much on-line searching to find anything that you might need.

Bratislava hosts successful 11th IIR cryogenics conference ...
The 11th IIR International Conference on Cryogenics was held in Bratislava, capital of Slovakia, from 26-29th April 2010. Historically, the event has been held at various city locations in the former Chechoslovakia and in recent years, has been anchored in Prague, capital of the Czech Republic.
With the 23rd International Congress of Refrigeration set to take place in Prague in 2011 too, the organising comittee decided to relocate this year‘s conference gathering to Bratislava – an interesting change for the participants. And it was a move that appeared justified, as ninety participants arrived despite the economical crisis.
As usual, the conference afforded a good opportunity to be aquainted with the work of colleagues, peers and specialists in the field of cryogenics, not only from Europe but from all over the world.
The first conference day was opened by the head of the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR), Dr. Didier Coulomb, together with the Chairman of the International Cryogenics Conference Committee, Professor Ralph Scurlock (UK), and the Chairman of the organisational committee Dr. Václav Chrz and Vice-Chairman Dr. Stanislav Šafrata.
Helium cryogenics
The first session was dedicated to helium cryogenics, with I. Sekachev´s (Canada) presentation impressing the audience with its description of a new cyclotron refrigeration system aided by liquefied helium and liquefied nitrogen.
A short workshop on the shortage of world helium resources was then introduced by Scurlock, who warned of the commercial dissolving and dissapearing of US national strategy reserves. Pointing to the fact that a great part of helium content in dynamically developing natural gas usage ends up in the atmosphere with combustion gases, Scurlock‘s suggestion was to initiate an independent international body, which would organise strategic helium recovery and storage.
