i'm not talking about sperm banks or anything. but if you put your scrotum near cold temperatures does it help conceive? if not that than is there a purpose why people do this?
The only reason that makes any sense for this behavior is to lower the blood pressure in the man's genitals so that he lasts longer in the hopes that the extended sexual experience will result in a higher probability of fertility. Generally blood travels better at cold temperatures so that is the reasoning behind it.

Does freezing sperm compromise the quality of the sperm?
Sep 16, 2009 by thatgirl90 | Posted in Trying to Conceive
Any statistics on whether or not healthier babies come from unfrozen sperm in the IVF process or is frozen vs. fresh about the same quality? Thank you!
The babies are just as healthy with frozen sperm as they are with fresh. The Mayo Clinic did a study that shows that couples undergoing IVF have the same incidence of healthy pregnancies and deliveries regardless of whether the sperm used in the procedure is fresh or frozen. The website below explains "However, not all sperm freeze and thaw well. There can be wide variations in the percentage of sperm that survive the freeze and thaw process. It is possible that no sperm will survive the freeze and thaw process."
Good question!

from my understanding of the process, some 10-20% of sperm are damaged by freezing and rendered nonviable

They don't freeze sperm during ivf (unless it's coming from a sperm bank). The man goes to make his "deposit" the same time the woman goes in for egg retrieval and they put them together right away or they will pick out individual sperm and inject it into the egg. When sperm are frozen, some of them do die, I think around 25% but it's not always the poor ones. Whenever they do any procedure they "wash" the sperm which cleans out the bad sperm. Either fresh or frozen will usually produce an embryo but it's what the sperm (or egg) is carrying that will make it healthy or not- the genes. I have been through ivf twice due to my husbands' poor sperm quality and our twin boys are completely healthy. I don't think fresh or frozen has anything to do with it.

Freezing sperm to ship to a fertility clinic?
Feb 25, 2009 by IM | Posted in Trying to Conceive
Does anyone know where I can rent the thing to freeze sperm and send it to a fertility clinic?
You should have the sperm frozen at a clinic and then see if they can ship for you in appropriate equipment.

Discovery Health "How Sperm Banks Work"
Some people find they need help conceiving. They struggle with sterility, decreased fertility or one of the many other causes that make conception difficult. Sperm banks, also known as cryobanks, are facilities that offer solutions to male infertility . Sperm banks collect and store sperm and offer andrology laboratory services such as semen analysis, frozen donor sperm services and long-term sperm storage. There are two main motives that drive donors:
Donations from fertile men who wish to preserve their reproductive options. Men often bank sperm for future use when facing surgery, cancer treatment, vasectomy, gender reassignment or a low sperm count (oligozoospermia). Similarly, men who work in occupations that put their fertility at risk -- like athletes, soldiers or men who work with environmental pollutants -- often use sperm banks. Donations from men who contribute for altruistic or financial reasons. Donor sperm helps infertile couples or single parents conceive.
The use of donor sperm for human conception can be traced back to the 18th century, but it wasn't until the early 20th century that efforts to freeze, store and thaw sperm began to materialize. In 1949, scientists discovered a technique for freezing semen with glycerol, a method that proved less likely to injure sperm [source: California Cryobank ].
But it was Jerome K. Sherman's work in cryobiology, the study of organisms and cells at sub-zero temperatures, that took earlier scientific efforts to new levels. As a doctoral candidate at the University of Iowa in the early 1950s, Sherman's research led him to a method of successfully freezing and thawing sperm. In 1953, he founded the world's first sperm bank, and it was from that pioneering bank that the first human birth from cryopreserved sperm was recorded [source: University of Iowa Alumni Association ]. However, it took two more decades for the idea of sperm banks to become culturally acceptable [source: California Cryobank ].
