Cryogenic freezing?

I saw on the History channel on Modern Marvels "Extreme Cold" that there was a cryogenic freezing lab somewhere. These bodies are waiting to be unthawed one day looking the same as they did before the deep freeze. How long do they have to be frozen for? Does the freeze-ee pick how long they want to stay frozen?
Anyone with info thank you.

Hi!

The Cryonic providers in the US are the Cryonics Institute, http://www.cryonics.org in Michigan, and Alcor http://www.alcor.org in Arizona. Outside of the US, there are several other organizations, including Kryorus in Russia.

These companies offer, for a fee, to retrieve your body after death, and preserve it at liquid nitrogen temperatures. There is no specific amount of time they will hold your body, you will be preserved until the technology becomes available to revive you.

As for how long that it might take to be revived, good question. Right now, today, we cannot revive a person that has been frozen, even if they were healthly when they were preserved. There are a couple of reasons, "ice damage" and Cryoprotectant toxicity. Both are problems that are being researched, and have had some remarkable breakthroughs(1).

For the people that are already frozen, the hope is that nanotechnology, tiny robotic machines that operate in swarms will be able to repair the damage. "Nano" is also undergoing a lot of research now,(2) and we are starting to see real nano inspired technology on the horizon(3).

Hope that helps,
Ellie

1. Vitrification technology which allows freezing without any ice crystals has recently advanced to the point where entire organs can be preserved, thawed, and Live! (21st Century medicine, http://www.21cm.com)

2. Wall street Journal, BBC, Take your pick.

3. In medicine and cosmetics currently, mostly. In another 4 or 5 years we will probably start seeing carbon nano-tube supercapacitors in hybrid cars too.

Like the Walt Disney rumor of how he was Cryogenically frozen.
It's usually until their is the technology to unfreeze the bodies.
The people, whom would choose to be frozen, would most likely choose to be frozen until they can be unfrozen in future times.

They are frozen until scientists discover a way to un-freeze them. Right now they know how to freeze them but don't know how to successfully un-freeze. I saw something on it....they said something about the cold and heat and the body molucules not being able to sustain the un-freezing process with the current technology. So I guess they could be frozen anywhere from 10 years to 1000 years lol.

cryogenic freezing?

Do you know anyone who has signed up for it?
Would you do it if you had the money?
I think it would be kinda cool to come back in 100 years and see what the world is like!

i'd have a go

Yeah, if I had the spare cash lying around for all my family why not, nothing to lose.

Do your brain cell walls not rupture when you freeze the brain due to the high water content and as we all know water expands when it freezes, so upon defrost you will be just a pile of mush!

Walt Disney supposedly had his head frozen.
Wouldn't do it myself, one life is enough for anybody.

Cryogenic Freezing?

If someone were to be Cryogenically Frozen, would their hair keep growing?
(This is to say, that they've perfected it and people could be frozen as such)

Ziggy123's answer is not quite correct. Before freezing a human being, they remove all of the water in your body and replace it with liquid nitrogen for easy freezing and no ice to damage your cells/tissue.

He is right in that all bodily functions would stop. Cells wouldn't live or die, and that's where hair and nails come from, so your hair would stay the same.

Britney Spears wants to be frozen after her death | The Sun ...

BRITNEY SPEARS wants to be FROZEN after her death - so she can be brought back to life later.

The eccentric star wants her body preserved in LIQUID NITROGEN so future generations can enjoy her dance routines in red plastic catsuits.

Britney is so enamoured by the idea - "cryogenic" freezing - that she's investing in a firm specialising in it.

The Alcor Life Extension Foundation is one of the oldest companies of its kind, founded in 1972. On its website, the Arizona-based firm gives its aim as: "Using ultra-cold temperature to preserve human life with the intent of restoring good health when technology becomes available to do so."

A pal of the star said: "Brit gets these obsessions and this is the latest.

"It started when someone told her Walt Disney had been preserved by cryogenics to be revived in the future. That was a myth but it got her researching the foundation and she became convinced it was worth a shot.

"Brit found the whole thing so interesting she spent most of her Mother's Day trip to Disneyland researching the subject on the internet while a nanny took the boys round the park.

"She looked into having her ashes turned into diamonds after she is gone but settled on the chance of getting to live in the future."

But before she invests loads of cash, she has to convince her dad Jamie, who currently holds the purse strings.

The source went on: "Jamie is quite happy to let Brit have her little obsessions, especially when it means she's holed up on the internet safely or watching the Discovery Channel.

"And if she wants to invest her money in cryogenics that's fine, we're only talking $350,000 tops. However, much more than that and he may change his mind."

The company has been the subject of controversy in the past.

Last year ex-employee Larry Johnson alleged, in his book Frozen, that a former baseball star's head stored on the premises had been walloped by staff practising their batting swing.
