whats the best way to organize an under stairs area in the basement for storage?

its oddly shaped and id like to make it a sort of closet for excess things in my basement so its not so cluttered... any ideas? the basement wall is painted block, not sure if i can or should screw into it, but it seems like shelving would be a good use of space.
I would use storage systems on wheels that are increasingly tall to fit in the space. That will make it esp handy if your access is from the end instead of the side, and if you have to remove everything in front to get to the back. This will also save from having to drive anything into the block.
That said, it is possible to screw into anything as long as that item is sturdy enough to hold the weight of what you want to store, and when you use the right hardware for that material. I would take pics of the area, take it into the home depot or whatever and tell them your situation so that they can help you figure it out.
Shelving is a good idea, or anything else, just don't affix it to the wall. Use free standing storage shelves, cabinets, drawers...all on wheels!
The added benefit of using wheeled storage is that when you do take stuff out, such as holiday decor, you can move it to wherever it is being used or bring the container out when that stuff is being put away.

You can use concrete anchors and screws to hang shelves in the block. You can get them at any hardware store and the container store also sells them to be used with their elfa storage systems.

Need ideas for unfinished basement?
Jul 11, 2010 by Tigerlily | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I just moved into a house (this is a rental) with a partially finished basement. Part of the basement floor is concrete and part of it is dirt. I would like an inexpensive way to make this space to where it can be utilized for something other than storage. Any ideas?
number one rule when renting is always get written permission from the owners to do any kind of changes and take pictures be for and after your done.number 2 is the basement dry, is it kind of musty? if it is dry that is good you won,t have to worry about things getting moldy while in storage.
if it is musty smelling or shows signs of mold or feels damp don,t store anything. lets say it is dry and cozy and you have permition to do what you need to do 1 you could put in a simple cat walk to the concreat section. or use pallets you can get those from a store that gets large deliverys like lows or whom ever. 3 or just ask the owners if they could put in a cat walk or the like. ps .you will need tools to do eather configuration. if you do not have how to use power tools have some one help you. i hope this helps good luck

You can use a few things. Old carpeting purchased at garage sales could be used on the floor, something you can dispose of when you move. Build a low style, elongated bench seat to sit along the wall. Think about setting tall, artificial trees/plants on it for hiding the wall. Behind it you could use window shades (painted) to cover the dirt wall. Be creative here. Maybe an outdoor theme to blend with the plants. Posters of your favorite sport or idol could be used on the wall too. Another idea to use this unfinished area, follow the above ideas and have an exercize area or hobby room.

Anybody have ideas on how to warm up a cold and dark basement suite?
Oct 07, 2008 by Okeedokee | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I'm renting this place because it's a stellar deal, but the catch is that it's an "old people" house complete with old people furnishings, decorations, and smell. I'm allowed to move all the furniture and crap to the storage room, but the walls, floors, etc, are all old school, and the place is juts kind of depressingly old. There's not a lot of light either, as it's a basement suite, so I'm looking for ways to brighten up and "warm" up a creepy old basement suite.
well for starters it would be easier to help if we knew the type of finish the walls have. if its drywall, go for a lite beige and add white trim, it will give it a fresh and clean look, while maintaining a new sophisticated look while adding a calming effect without it being darkend. grab 2 matching floor lamps and place on opposite ends it will add decore and well obviously add more light. dont really know how much space you have either! if you get to add a couch leave it a lighter color and add a throw blanket and some pillows. Hope this gets you some ideas atleast

I have hated my basement for years. We don't have water issues or problems with bugs. The space is large, it gets natural light and the finished portion will eventually be the perfect playroom for our daughter. But then there's the storage area,
